Amaravathi Crocodile Farm

About

The Amaravathy reservoir and its feeding rivers (Chinnar, Thennar, Pambar) hold South India's largest wild breeding population of broad-snouted Mugger crocodiles. As numbers dwindled in the wild, the Forest Department began this captive-breeding project: eggs are collected from wild nests around the reservoir, hatched and reared at the farm, and grown crocodiles are reintroduced into the wild. The farm currently maintains 98 crocodiles (25 male, 73 female), managed by three Forest Department staff.

Highlights

A rare chance to see large numbers of Mugger crocodiles of all sizes basking together — a working conservation project, not just a display. Typical visit lasts 30-60 minutes.
